THE STORY

The story of DU HAMEL began in 2017, when Benoît du Hamel had his first bespoke suit made. He wore it as he started his career in mergers and acquisitions at VINCI Airports. It accompanied him during his first meetings, his first M&A deals and the beginning of his professional life.

Later, during an exchange in Shanghai, Benoît discovered another approach to tailoring. He took the time to understand the depth of Asian craftsmanship and had many bespoke pieces made there. He was impressed not only by the quality of the work, but also by the attention given to every detail.

When he returned to Europe and continued his career at Eurazeo and Lazard, his suits began to attract the curiosity of his colleagues. They regularly asked him where they came from and how they could have similar pieces made. At the time, Benoît was not thinking about creating a company. These suits were simply part of his life. They helped him feel comfortable and confident in environments where appearance, precision and respect for context mattered.

A few years later, he was recruited by the former CEO of Goldman Sachs France to help create an M&A advisory firm. As he prepared for this new chapter, Benoît realised that his old suits no longer fitted him as they should. He looked for a new bespoke experience in Paris but could not find the combination he was searching for: precise work, personal attention, fast execution and a rational budget.

So he returned to Shanghai. There, he had a new wardrobe made for his professional life. Once again, he found the quality of service, attention to detail and efficiency that he remembered. This journey made him realise that the experience he was looking for should also exist in Paris.

When he came back, he decided to create DU HAMEL. The idea was simple: to offer bespoke suits and shirts with a high level of precision, a truly personal service and a price that remained rational.

This idea became the foundation of Rational Luxury. For us, Rational Luxury is a form of luxury that is desirable but disciplined, elegant but discreet, and connected to the realities of life. It does not seek excess for the sake of excess. It values what is useful, beautifully made and created to last. It is the choice of excellence over accumulation, purpose over display and permanence over passing trends.

A NEW APPROACH TO BESPOKE

Benoît has always had a mathematical mind. He values structure, measurement and precision. For him, a garment should not simply look right. It should be created from a deep understanding of the person who will wear it. He therefore decided to bring technology into the bespoke experience.

Working with leading European engineering teams, DU HAMEL developed a technological measurement process capable of creating and preserving a three-dimensional avatar of each client. This avatar provides much more information than a simple list of measurements. It reveals the client’s posture, balance and natural asymmetries, essential elements, as no two bodies stand, move or live in exactly the same way.

Technology gives us a more precise starting point, while human experience gives meaning to this information. This is why every DU HAMEL appointment is also a conversation. We take the time to understand the client’s profession, environment, habits and expectations. We consider where the garment will be worn, how often it will be used and how the client wishes to feel in it.

This understanding guides every decision, from the cut and fabric to the construction and smallest personal details. The objective is not to change the person, but to create clothes that feel natural, provide exceptional comfort and express the client’s presence with precision.

A STORY THAT CONTINUES

This new model has allowed DU HAMEL to work with clients and institutions that share the same attention to excellence. The Paris Opera selected DU HAMEL as an official supplier to its Chorus. The Maison also contributed to the production of a biopic dedicated to King Juan Carlos I of Spain.

DU HAMEL has also partnered with CVC, one of the world’s leading investment firms, with more than €200 billion in assets under management, to offer its teams a personal and entirely bespoke experience.

These projects are different, but they all express the same idea: clothing must first serve the person, the role and the moment.

What began in 2017 with one bespoke suit has become a new vision of tailoring, more precise, more personal and more rational. DU HAMEL was created for those who appreciate beauty but also wish to understand its value. For those who choose carefully, expect excellence and believe that true luxury should have a purpose.

This is our vision of Rational Luxury.
