Case Study – Bespoke Creation for the Principal Conductor of the Beijing National Opera
Goal – Designing a Conductor’s Suit for Sun Yin
The conductor sought to design a suit that embodies:
- Charisma that resonates before the first note is even played
- Absolute freedom of movement, to accompany the broad and nuanced gestures of conducting
- A striking stage presence, without ever overshadowing the orchestra
- A subtle fusion of Western sartorial heritage and Chinese artistic tradition

Jacket
- Designed with a four-button front and a clean, minimalist mao collar, the jacket embodies contemporary elegance with subtle Eastern accents.
- The lightly structured shoulders, reinforced with invisible padding, offer refined support while allowing optimal arm mobility - essential for orchestral conducting.
- At the back, a double action pleat accompanies the conductor’s expansive gestures with natural fluidity.
- Discreet piped interior pockets ensure a clean finish and eliminate discomfort - unlike traditional flap pockets, which would add unnecessary bulk.
Trousers
- Cut with streamlined precision, the trousers feature an internal waistband with an anti-slip band, ensuring perfect hold — even through long rehearsals and performances.
- A plain hem without turn-ups adds a touch of modern sobriety, maintaining a clean line down to the shoe.
- The discreet side pockets are designed without excess fabric, preserving the purity of the drape and the harmony of the ensemble.
Signature Details
- The conductor’s initials are delicately embroidered inside the jacket in a tone-on-tone thread — a quiet nod to the intimacy of the performance.
- The trousers incorporate a custom elastic waistband, designed to adjust gracefully to subtle changes in physique — offering both comfort and discretion.
